To interrupt the relentless forward path of the highway requires conscious choice within a fleeting time. A driver stops to get gas, food, or lodging without ever truly leaving the highway. To venture into the town is to exit the present and enter the past, and the feeling is one of landing there as opposed to a continuity of experience. The town is a place of stasis and the highway presents a place of movement and progression, however fallacious.
