At the Community First! Homeless Village in East Austin, several homes known as the "Porch with a Home" were designed by Page Architects and built to provide shelter and dignity to those formerly afflicted by homelessness. Our AREA-ER class at UTSOA, led by professor Steve Ross, took on the challenge of enclosing one of the porches at the request of resident, as intended by the original architects. I served as the design, build, and project manager for the project. We chose to enclose the porch with cedar slats and created custom sliding barn doors, so that air and light could still flow through the space while giving enclosure for the client's dog, Bandit. Steel planter boxes allow the client to pursue her passion of gardening.
